- Move and talk freely with Smart Camera: With Smart Camera, you don't have to worry about being out of frame. Whether you're moving around the kitchen, prepping dinner or chasing the kids through the living room, Smart Camera adjusts to follow the action. And as more people enter a room, Smart Camera automatically widens to keep everyone in view, so you don't miss a moment.
- Private by design: Facebook doesn't listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls. Calls on Portal are encrypted, so conversations stay between you and those you're calling. You can also completely disable the camera and microphone with a single tap, or block the camera lens with the camera cover provided.
Will Facebook Portal be Discounted on Black Friday 2018?
The Portal from Facebook is a new product that was only released on November 8th 2018. As such, there is of course very limited data on which to make a Facebook Portal Black Friday deal prediction. That said, we still think Black Friday & Cyber Monday discounts on Facebook Portals are a strong possibility due to how competitive the market is for devices of this nature.
The Portal is Facebook’s first move into this market and they face strong competition from existing players like Lenovo and Amazon. So offering Black Friday Facebook Portal sales could be a good way to establish themselves. The devices can video call with non-Portal devices, such as a cell phone, but the experience is likely better if they are calling directly. Therefore, we think Facebook are likely to offer Portal bundle deals for those buying more than one on Black Friday.
Furthermore, the Portal comes in two different sizes and two colors, which means there are multiple models. In our experience, retailers are more likely to offer discounts when there is a variety of models, as they will put offers on less popular iterations to try and shift stale stock. So if you aren’t fussed about the model or color, there is more chance of being able to pickup some kind of Facebook Portal Black Friday or Cyber Monday discount.
Facebook Portal Overview
The Portal is a new smart home device from Facebook designed for making video calls, listening to music, setting reminders or asking questions with the built in Alexa voice assistant, checking the weather, news and more. Do bare in mind that a Facebook account is required to use the device, as calls are made over Messenger. Though you can still call people on Messenger even if they are not using a Portal device.
You may be wondering what the need is for such a device when you have already have a cell phone, tablet or laptop for making video calls, plus existing voice assistant devices for the other functionality. And this wouldn’t be a bad question to ask, however the Portal does feature some cool technology to make video calling that bit smoother. For example, the Smart Camera can follow you as you move around to help you stay in frame – within reason of course as the device cannot move. Additionally, the Smart Sound is designed to improve focusing on the users voice whilst reducing background noise.
As Alexa is built in, you have full access to all that Alexa can do with voice control. This includes linking your Spotify account to play music from Portal, setting timers when cooking, asking questions etc. – you know the drill. Privacy is also at the centre of the Facebook Portal, with several features to improve security. These include being able to disable the camera and microphone with one button on the top of the device.
In terms of specs, the Portal comes in two sizes; a 10.1 inch and 15.6 inch display, and is available in black or white. Under the hood the device features 2GB of RAM, 32GB of flash memory and a Qualcomm 2.45 GHz processor, so it’s got some decent hardware. Overall, we like the device and it certainly has some uses. Whether this is enough to justify the purchase depends on your value of these features, though Facebook Portal Black Friday deals could tempt you! We’ll be listing any we find right here.
